the birth of a quilter

I just learned what batiks were even though I’ve seen them for years (and apparently have some batik sarongs and didn’t know it!). But from what I can tell they are the bees knees in quilting fabric. I mean, they are beautiful but why sooo expensive? Why so popular? There are tons of beautiful fabrics out there, but it just seams that batiks are getting a lot of hype. What gives? Let me know something folks!!!

Courtesy of a flyer I picked up army first quilting class I learned about the Georgia Quilt Show. Now had I known about this show and had been last year perhaps my journey into quilting would have begun years ago. But alas, I know now and am ever so grateful that I do. I was not able to attend any classes but I was able to go to the exhibit hall and OMG I was so inspired by the art work I saw!

(The above photo is a compilation of many quilts that I saw)

While my creative brain couldn’t have been more in awe at all that I saw, my wallet was not so happy as I kept whipping out my debit card! Luckily though, being a new quilter, I didn’t really know what to buy and what not to buy and wasn’t able to compare prices as I don’t know what standard pricing is so I didn’t do too bad. I did purchase an extender table for my machine. Once that comes in I will definitely do a post on it. Other than that I just purchased some glitter thread.

If you know of other quilt shows please share!

It finally here!!! Walking boots? Nooooo. My walking foot for my sewing machine!! Yeahhhh baby!!

Now what in the world do I do with it? See, this is the danger of running out and buying everything your quilting instructor tells you to! Lol! But lo and behold Intown Quilters has an Intro to Machine Quilting class coming up on November 16! Woo hoo!!! It’s in the middle of the week and middle of the day so I don’t have to worry about a babysitter! I just requested the time off from work and registered for the class! I can’t wait!!!

Alas duty calls and my quilting project has been put on hold. Not only am I a full time mom of 3 and wife of 1, I work outside the home full time as well.

Normally I work from home and therefore am able to use my “commute” time of 1.5 hrs to do a little quilting once I get off work and before I pick up the kids. But this week I have to go into the office so my commute time is spent on the highways and biways. Just think, if I had Kitt (the car from Knight Rider) I could still quilt in the car while Kitt takes me to pick up the kids and takes us home!!

I’m readyyyyyyy!!!!! Ready for what? To start my first quilt of course silly! Below are pics that I am taking along the way.

Here is the pattern I chose; however, I did not purchase batik fabrics (heck I just learned what batiks were) ↓

After I “stacked and whacked” 10 stacks of 5″x5″ squares totaling 100 squares ↓

Of course as a newbie I had plenty of waste…and “do overs”. But I’m sure my scraps will go to good use later…right? ↓

My first row is complete and ironed! I’m so stoked!! ↓

Next I cut my sashing strips (another term I just learned…you all have your own language don’t you!) ↓

I’m on my way! As you can see in some areas I had to make a little snip because I didn’t make suer the pressed edge was down when sewing. A common newbie mistake right? Anyway, while the squares look wayyyy offline from the back, it doesn’t look that bad from the front. ↓

Next I cut my inner and outer border. But I miscalculated when cutting my outer border so back to Hobby Lobby for a wee bit more fabric. Dangit I was on a roll! Oh well, off I go. See you when I get back!
